Hogares Guadalupe has strong ties with the local community. Community members are invited to participate in the English program, and their participation increased in 2011. The residents of the orphanage also learn practical skills under the guidance of experts from the local community, cycling through the orphanage's carpentry shop, sewing shop, and shoemaking shop at appropriate ages.

During the 2011 program, the head of the carpentry shop lost his mother; many members of the orphanage attended the funeral. Mary Pat Clasen also attended, along with her friend Lauriana, a former resident of the orphanage, and wrote this account of the funeral.
